Born Not in the USA
Born Not in the USA was the final project for Semester one. We each chose a Spanish speaking country (generally in/around South America), and researched about what life was like living in that specific country. After the extensive research, we all wrote a story about the day in the life of a child from a specific country. My story was based out of Sigutepeue, Honduras, in Central America. This project was an awesome way to learn about different cultures, but even though I learned a ton about Honduras, one of the main things that I learned how to do was arrange my words in a way that they made sense when said in Spanish. Even though the arrangements of words were challenging, that would not be my top choice of something I would change. When I was writing my book, I made the mistake of trying to cram all of my words into just a couple of pages. Doing that made my book look not very "children booky" so if I were to go back and change one thing, it would be to spread the words out on my story more.
The habits of Heart and Mind are a huge thing at Animas, and ALWAYS relate back to our projects. For this project specifically, the habit of Heart and Mind that I used most was perseverance. This was used most because writing a book in a different language is a very challenging ordeal. Without perseverance, I would have given up and taken an F, but with it, I pushed through all of the confusion and wound up with a different, and interesting project.

Reflexion
What did you learn from this project?
I learned a lot about the Spanish language, and many techniques about conversing in the language. Writing an essay in Spanish challenged my vocabulary, enabling and enticing me to learn more than what I previously knew. Also, during the exhibition, there were fluent Spanish speakers attending, and when talking to them, they introduced a whole new way and speed of speaking the language.
What did you learn about the artist you studied?
Fernando Vicente (my chosen artist) was born in Madrid, Spain, where he started working as illustrator and painter during the eighties. He creates very beautiful artworks mainly painted or mixing paint and photo. His illustration work can be seen in dozens of publications. Most of his works are very morbid and and consist of dark messages because he has a dying mother and she is the person who inspires all of his artwork. When he was first getting started, he was not a very "known" artist, but since then he has been steadily making himself and his artwork known.
What were you proud of from this project? Why?
I was proud of the work that I put into my visual piece. I went through many different ideas, and when I finally thought I found one that would work, I began working on it but it didn't have the visual effect I was searching for, so instead of persisting with that initial idea, I changed my idea and completely started over. I persisted with the second idea and it resulted in looking very refined and original. Up to the last second, I was refining it and making it look aesthetically pleasing. By doing that, it made me much more proud to display the piece that I had invested so much time and effort into.
What would you do differently next time?
I would come up with a better idea for a project the first time, instead of progressing very far and then restarting. I have this problem with almost every visual project I do, so if I could learn how to prevent that, it would help me all across the board. To do this differently, I would not start right away. I would give myself time to think and come up with many different ideas, and only after I had come with a very solid idea would I start. If I can do this from now on, I believe it will make doing visual projects much less stressful.
What was challenging about this project?
It was challenging to try to copy somebody else's style of art, while staying true to your own art expressions. Another thing that was very challenging was learning so many new Spanish terms, and trying to fluently converse. Talking and writing the Spanish language are two extremely opposite feats. It is easier to see when you are making a mistake in writing, but during conversation, you have to be quick while you speak and also keep track of all of the new elements being added (accents, speed, unknown words, etc.). Though these things were challenging, they were very valuable in helping us learn to become better Spanish speakers.

La Receta y Oda
Project Reflection
This project was a fantastic way to learn more about our chosen countries culture, a great way to experience new tastes, and learn how to write poetry in Spanish. In order to make the recipes "bilingual" we had to translate the English versions of our recipes to a Spanish version. Doing this was much harder than it sounds due to the order of words being different in the latter language. We did the same thing with our Odes, which turned out to be significantly harder than the recipe because of how many different ways there are to say something in the Spanish language. Despite the challenges, this was a very worthwhile project and I would gladly do it again.
The following sheets are my ode and my recipe.
